Apocalypse Now (1979) - Full Expanded soundtrack (Carmine Coppola) Apocalypse Now Redux 2001

To watch it is to feel yourself lifted up to the heights where the cinema can take you, but so rarely does. The film is a mirror reflecting our feelings about the war in Vietnam, in all their complexity and sadness.

To those who wrote me defending the banality of " Pearl Harbor ," I wrote back: "See 'Apocalypse Now' and reflect on the difference.

The movie comes to us now in a new version, 49 minutes longer than the original. The most unexpected thing about "Apocalypse Now Redux" may not be the restored footage, however, but the new Technicolor dye-transfer prints.

An expert on prints, Jeff Joseph, tells me: "This is essentially a reworking of the old three-strip Technicolor process. The physical look of the film is therefore voluptuous and saturated.

This is what would be at risk with digital projection. Coppola also pushes the envelope with the remastered soundtrack, and I was reminded of the film's world premiere at Cannes in , when the old Palais was so filled with light and sound that I felt enveloped; the helicopters in the famous village assault could first be heard behind me, and then passed overhead, and yes, there were people who involuntarily ducked.

To be able to come home from the hellish production conditions on the Philippines locations with a film of such technical mastery is miraculous.

The story concerns a journey upriver by Capt. Willard Martin Sheen , who commands a patrol boat to penetrate behind enemy lines and discover the secret redoubt of the almost mythical Col.

Kurtz Marlon Brando -- one of the Army's most decorated soldiers, now leading his own band of tribesmen. The story is based on Conrad's Heart of Darkness , but replaces the implacable mystery of the upper reaches of the Congo with the equally unfathomable mystery of the American venture in Vietnam.

When you get to the bottom of who Kurtz has become and what he is thinking, you can see how the war transformed the original American idealism.

The movie consists of a series of set pieces. The most famous is the assault on the village, opening with the helicopter loudspeakers blasting Wagner at the terrified students and teachers, and continuing with Lt.

Kilgore Robert Duvall and his swashbuckling bravado on the beach "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". Other sequences are also in the permanent memory of moviegoers: The drugged monotony of the river journey, the sudden gunfire that kills everyone on the sampan, the Playboy Playmates entertaining the troops, the dreamlike final approach to Kurtz's compound, the shadowed Kurtz and his bleak aphorisms, and the giggling assent of the stoned photographer Dennis Hopper , who is the Fool to his Lear.

To the majesty of these scenes in their progression to Kurtz's words "the Horror," Coppola has now added 49 minutes, most of them devoted to a visit by the crew to a French plantation, a colonial leftover that somehow survives.

At dinner the Americans and French discuss the colonial history of Vietnam, and Willard's eyes meet those of Roxanne Aurore Clement , a widow who will spend the night in his arms.

Other new footage includes dialogue and byplay on the boat, a second encounter with the Playmates, and additional dialogue by Kurtz.

In a note released with the film, Coppola emphasizes that this new material was not simply shoehorned into the original version of the film, but that "Redux" is "a new rendition of the movie from scratch.

The version "terrified" him, he says, because it was "too long, too strange and didn't resolve itself in a kind of classic big battle at the end.

To consider "Apocalypse Now" mainstream or tame in either form is a bizarre judgment for Coppola to pass on his picture, but then he has a history of incautious and inexplicable remarks about it, going back to the infamous Cannes press conference where he confessed he had "problems with the ending," and many critics thought he was talking about the Kurtz episode, and not as he was the closing titles.

My own feeling is that the original cut was neither mainstream nor tame, but epic filmmaking on a scale within the reach of only a few directors -- Tarkovsky, Lean, Eisenstein, Kurosawa.

The new version therefore triggered my suspicion. I was happy to see the additional footage, and indeed had seen it before, in outtake form.

Did the movie require it? Some of the footage enters seamlessly into the work and disappears, enriching it.

That would include the river footage and some moments with the photographer. The new Brando footage, including some more pointed analysis of the war, is a valuable addition.

The Playmate footage simply doesn't work; it was left out of the original because a typhoon prevented him from completing its filming, Coppola says, but "Walter found a way to get in and out of the sequence.

It is the French plantation sequence that gives me the most pause. It represents a significant re-edit of the original version. Francis Ford Coppola began production on the new cut with working-partner Kim Aubry.

Coppola then tried to get Murch, who was reluctant at first. He thought it would be extremely difficult recutting a film that had taken two years to edit originally.

He later changed his mind after working on the reconstruction of Orson Welles ' Touch of Evil. Coppola and Murch then examined several of the rough prints and dailies for the film.

It was decided early on that the editing of the film would be like editing a new film altogether. One such example was the new French plantation sequence.

The scenes were greatly edited to fit into the movie originally, only to be cut out in the end. When working again on the film, instead of using the heavily edited version, Murch decided to work the scene all over again, editing it as if for the first time.

Much work needed to be done to the new scenes. Due to the off-screen noises during the shoot, most of the dialogue was impossible to hear.

During post-production of the film the actors were brought back to re-record their lines known as A. This was done for the scenes that made it into the original cut, but not for the deleted scenes.

To make matters worse, composer Carmine Coppola had died in However, the old recording and musical scores were checked and a track titled "Love Theme" was found.

During scoring, Francis Coppola had told Carmine, his father, to write a theme for the scene before it was ultimately deleted. For the remake, the track was recorded by a group of synthesists.

Vittorio Storaro also returned from Italy to head the development of a new color balance of the film and new scenes.

When Redux was being released, Storaro learned that a Technicolor dye-transfer process was being brought back. The dye-transfer is a three-strip process that makes the color highly saturated and has consistent black tone.

Storaro wished to use this on Redux , but in order to do it, he needed to cut the original negative of Apocalypse Now , leaving Apocalypse Now Redux the only version available.

Storaro decided to do it, when convinced by Coppola that this version would be the one that would be remembered. The film contains several alterations, and two entirely new scenes.

One of the new scenes has the boat meeting the Playmates once again, further up the river; the other has them meet a family of holdout French colonists on their remote rubber plantation.

There are also a few additional scenes with Colonel Kurtz. The film was given a limited release in the U. The website's critics consensus reads, "The additional footage slows down the movie somewhat some say the new cut is inferior to the original , but Apocalypse Now Redux is still a great piece of cinema.

Scott of The New York Times , who wrote that it "grows richer and stranger with each viewing, and the restoration of scenes left in the cutting room two decades ago has only added to its sublimity.

Some critics, however, thought the new scenes slowed the pacing, were too lengthy notably the French plantation sequence , and added nothing overall to the film's impact.

Owen Gleiberman wrote " Apocalypse Now Redux is the meandering, indulgent art project that [Francis Ford Coppola] was still enough of a craftsman, in , to avoid.

Roger Ebert wrote: "Longer or shorter, redux or not, Apocalypse Now is one of the central events of my life as a filmgoer. A soundtrack was released on July 31, by Nonesuch.

The soundtrack contains most of the original tracks remastered , as well as some for the new scenes "Clean's Funeral", "Love Theme".

It is the French plantation sequence that gives me the most pause. It is long enough, I think, that is distracts from the overall arc of the movie.

The river journey sets the rhythm of the film, and too much time on the banks interrupts it there is the same problem with the feuding families in Huckleberry Finn.

Yet the sequence is effective and provoking despite the inappropriate music during the love scene. It helps me to understand it when Coppola explains that he sees the French like ghosts; I questioned how they had survived in their little enclave, and accept his feeling that their spirits survive as a cautionary specter for the Americans.

Longer or shorter, redux or not, "Apocalypse Now" is one of the central events of my life as a filmgoer. To have it in this beautiful print is a luxury.

This new version will make its way to DVD and be welcome there, but the place to see it is in a movie theater, sitting not too far back, your eyes and ears filled with its haunting vision.

Jul 06, A fantastic new version that adds some incredible scenes,m. To see my real review go to the page for the original Apocalypse Now version.

One of my all-time favorite films. Bradley W Super Reviewer. Feb 29, Like most people, I had a similar reaction to Apocalypse Now: Redux in that I didn't find it all that great as a film.

There's a reason all of this extra footage was cut out in the first place: to make a better film. They succeeded in that. People like to take Francis Ford Coppola to task for going all George Lucas on his masterpiece and tinkering with it, but the difference is that Coppola is just as happy with the original film as he is with this alternate version, which is what he calls it.

It's a fresh approach to the material that was shot in the late 's by mostly the same group of people who made it in the first place.

For me, I find it to be a bit fascinating to see the extra footage and how it works in the context of the film that I'm already very familiar with.

The trouble is that it doesn't improve what had already been perfected to begin with. Again, I'm not criticizing the effort, just stating my feelings about it.

I feel the new footage slows the pace of an already long film down. If you're bogged down in what's happening in the story with a narrative that follows a man up a river to find a Colonel, then you're gonna be bored when he stops off for a half an hour to talk to some French plantation owners.

They're good scenes in and of themselves, but I think the film improves without their inclusion. Thankfully both versions are readily available and some people do find Redux to be an improvement story-wise, especially as it relates to Clean's character, but I prefer the much slicker and more tightly-edited narrative of the original film.

It's a mix of art and storytelling that winds up being a perfect blend, and even twenty years later it can't be improved upon with never before seen footage.
